Smidge Infant Probiotic Powder, formerly known as GutPro Infant, is one of those rare products that was born directly from the needs and requests of parents and healthcare practitioners. The story behind this formula is one of meticulous care: Smidge founder Dan Corrigan, who has extensive experience working with families of children with sensitivities and developmental challenges, collaborated with certified doctors, health practitioners, and parents to create a probiotic blend that would be gentle enough for the most delicate digestive systems while still being effective enough to make a meaningful difference in a baby's developing microbiome.
The result is a seven strain probiotic powder that mirrors the beneficial bacteria naturally found in the intestines of healthy infants. At the heart of this formula is Bifidobacterium infantis, which comprises a full 50 percent of the blend. This particular strain dominates the intestinal environment of breastfed babies for good reason: research has shown it supports healthy digestion, promotes growth, and helps establish a robust immune system from the earliest days of life. B. infantis, along with several other strains in the formula, also produces folate, a nutrient essential for infant development, growth, and red blood cell creation.
The remaining strains in the formula are equally thoughtfully chosen. Bifidobacterium bifidum supports the intestinal lining and overall gut health. Bifidobacterium longum helps with the breakdown of carbohydrates and produces organic acids that create a favourable gut environment. Bifidobacterium breve, one of the most prevalent beneficial bacteria in breastfed babies' colons, has a unique ability to compete with harmful bacteria by digesting a wide variety of molecules. Bifidobacterium lactis breaks down body waste and aids in the absorption of vitamins and minerals, with research showing it helps preterm babies gain weight and develop their immune systems. Lactobacillus gasseri, naturally found in the human digestive and urinary tracts, supports healthy oxidative responses. Lactobacillus salivarius supports oral health and immune function, producing organic acids that help maintain a healthy microbial population.
What is deliberately absent from this formula is just as important as what is included. Smidge intentionally omitted L. plantarum, a plant-based strain that is very concentrated and would increase the overall strength of the formula beyond what is appropriate for an infant's developing system. There are no prebiotics whatsoever in this product. While prebiotics like inulin and maltodextrin are commonly found in commercial probiotic brands (often used as fillers), they can feed pathogenic bacteria and cause negative reactions in babies and anyone with sensitive digestive systems. Breast milk already contains its own unique prebiotics, making supplemental prebiotics unnecessary and potentially counterproductive.
Critically, this formula contains only histamine neutral or histamine degrading strains. It does not contain any strains known to cause histamine sensitivity, D lactic acidosis, or other adverse reactions that are unfortunately common with commercial probiotic products. This makes it suitable for use alongside dietary protocols such as GAPS, Paleo, AIP, and ketogenic dietary protocols.
Each serving is just one tiny Smidge spoonful (approximately 20mg), delivering 1.45 billion CFUs of carefully balanced beneficial bacteria. The product comes with a custom dosage spoon designed specifically for these micro doses. There is nothing in the bottle except the probiotic blend itself: no fillers, no excipients, no flow agents, no capsule materials. It is the purest possible form of infant probiotic supplementation.
The powder can be administered in several ways. For newborns, parents can place a pencil point amount directly into the baby's mouth prior to nursing, or mix it with a small amount of breastmilk or formula on a spoon and give immediately before feeding. It can also be placed directly onto the breast during feeding. For toddlers and older children, it can be sprinkled on lukewarm or cold food, mixed into a smoothie, or taken with an organic fat like butter, ghee, emu oil, or coconut oil. The probiotic bacteria are freeze-dried and only activated when they come into contact with moisture, which ensures stability during shipping and storage.
All strains are non-GMO and American Type Culture Collection certified, meaning they have been rigorously tested and banked in recognised microbial culture collections for safety and authenticity. The product is sourced and produced in the USA in small batches to ensure maximum freshness and strength.
