The Oryx Desert Salt Grinder is the everyday-essential kitchen item that quietly upgrades almost everything you cook. Oryx Desert Salt is a naturally organic, crystal-white gourmet salt: sun-dried, mineral-rich, unrefined, unprocessed and free from anti-caking agents, free-flow chemicals or any kind of additive. It is harvested from a sustainable underground brine lake in the pristine Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa, fed by subterranean streams flowing through 250-million-year-old Dwyka rock formations. The brine is pumped onto a salt pan and sun-dried under the African sun, a process that lives in harmony with the natural rainfall and the surrounding environment. Nothing is added; nothing is taken away.
The grinder itself is built around a long-lasting ceramic grinding mechanism, which matters for two reasons. First, it doesn't grind plastic into your food the way many cheap supermarket grinders do, a small detail that adds up across a year of seasoning. Second, ceramic mechanisms last considerably longer than steel ones and don't corrode in the moist environment of a kitchen. The grinder is fully refillable using Oryx refill boxes (sold separately), which is part of the brand's #RefillNotLandfill philosophy.
Oryx Desert Salt is renowned amongst chefs for its delicate, flavour-enhancing taste. South Africa's first Michelin-star chef Jan Hendrik has said "no dish is complete without a pinch of Oryx Desert Salt." The salt comes from a 50km² salt pan within a 900,000km² desert, far from industrial pollution and free from the microplastic contamination that affects sea salt and the heavy mining footprint of many Himalayan salts. The underground lake holds approximately 55 million tons of brine and replenishes naturally, making this one of the most sustainable salt sources in the world.
Use it as you would any salt: to season cooking, finish dishes at the table, or simply to add depth to a slice of fresh tomato. The crystal-white grains release a clean, pure salt flavour with subtle mineral notes that is different from refined table salt. A small percentage of every Oryx Desert Salt sale supports Project Biome and TFPD (Transfrontier Parks Destinations), which works alongside the First People communities of the Kalahari to preserve cultural heritage and create sustainable livelihoods.
